Carboxytherapy

Carboxytherapy is the use of carbon dioxide gas in therapeutic and rejuvenation techniques. Carbon dioxide is naturally present in the air around us, and we are exposed to it all of the time, with no harmful effects. This is often considered to be a major advantage of this procedure over other techniques, which could instead involve the use of artificial chemicals. Although it is not usually marketed as a form of non-invasive liposuction, the procedure is thought to destroy fat cells, so it could potentially be used in this manner.

The carboxytherapy treatment itself involves the injection of carbon dioxide gas just underneath the surface of the skin. This is intended to increase the circulation of the blood, which promotes cell growth. Cell growth naturally slows down during the ageing process, and this is a result of reduced circulation. The treatment increases the level of carbon dioxide, a natural waste product that is made by our cells, and it tricks the body into thinking that more oxygen is needed. This, in turn, leads to a greater flow of blood and more cell growth. Structural proteins such as collagen are also made.

The injections are carried out using extremely small needles, so this is considered to be a non-surgical technique. It can be used to reduce the appearance of blemishes on the skin, including scars, cellulite, dark circles under the eyes, and stretch marks. The risk of side effects is very low, but does include the possibility of bruising at the injection sites. A course of six to twelve injections is recommended, and these should take place once a week.
