Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) Injections
Platelet rich plasma injections, sometimes known as PRP injections, involve the use of the patient’s own blood as a method of treating injuries and also encouraging the regeneration of tissue. It was originally introduced as a method of rejuvenating the skin and reducing the physical signs of ageing. In contrast to many other cosmetic treatments, there are no artificial chemicals used.
This procedure is considered to be minimally invasive, as it requires the use of injections, but is non-surgical. A blood sample will initially need to be drawn, and this is processed to increase the concentration of platelets present, before being injected back into the treatment areas. The injections of platelet rich plasma can be carried out in a wide range of areas, with the most popular being the face. The procedure may be described as the “vampire facelift”, as it involves the injection of blood into the facial regions.
Platelet rich plasma injections are suitable for most people who are looking to achieve a more youthful appearance, and the risks of side effects are low. Unlike with artificial chemicals, there is no risk of rejection because the body’s own cells are being used. There is, however, a risk of bruising, swelling and redness as a result of the injections, but these should resolve within a few days. Up to three treatments may be required in order to achieve the best results, but these are then expected to last for up to a year and a half.
